This situation comedy was a spoof of television and the people
who work in it. Joyce Whitman was a fortyish movie actress whose
career had been on the decline until she was offered the starring
role in a new television series called Undercover Woman. Joyce
jumped at the chance, only to discover that the director was her
suave, sarcastic ex-husband, John Elliot. None of the mutual
antagonism that had ended their marriage had ebbed, and the
two of them spent much of their time on the set putting each other
down. Others working on Undercover Woman were Joyce's TV
"partner," Tracy Garrett, a sexy young actress who was mindlessly
clawing her way to the top, using anybody and anything to get
there; Fletcher Huff, a fidgety actor who played the police chief
for whom Undercover Woman worked; and Hugo Muncy, her
stuntman double. Also wandering around the set was Doug
Porterfield, the network liaison man assigned to the series by
the CBS Television Network. Doug ws forever trying to assert
himself as a network "executive," but his weak, bumbling
personality kept getting in his way, making it difficult
for anybody on the set to take him any seriously at all.
